The Daily Dawg Tags bring you all the Cleveland Browns news you need to know, including a look at the claim that Baker Mayfield is a system quarterback

Baker Mayfield is in the news lately since the idea of an extension for the Cleveland Browns quarterback has been floated. Mayfield hasn’t said much about it and seems to be taking the patient approach but that won’t stop the debate about how much he deserves.

And while there will be plenty of fans and pundits who think he should get a big extension, there will also be those who think he shouldn’t. As of late, former NFL general manager Mike Tannenbaum has gone on record saying Mayfield shouldn’t get a big contract, citing Kevin Stefanski as the reason for his success.

But does Tannenbaum’s claim that Mayfield is a ‘system quarterback’ have any merit? That’s the question Terry Pluto dug into in one of his latest articles and there are several layers he had to get through when evaluating the fourth-year quarterback.

That story and more can be found in today’s Daily Dawg Tags.

What to make of Baker Mayfield as a ‘system QB’ and the case against him? Terry’s Talkin’ Browns — Terry Pluto, Cleveland.com

"“Mayfield may not be great, but he’s good enough to get this team to playoffs and win a postseason game. A second year with Stefanski and the entire offense returning, he should be better than his productive 2020 season in 2021.”"

Pluto does dive into the claims that Mayfield needs a great cast around him — including a stellar offensive line to succeed. However, he says that this is true of all quarterbacks outside of maybe the truly elite ones. But hey, we even saw Patrick Mahomes struggle without a good line.

In the end, he’s right. Mayfield is good enough to win, so why do we need to dig much deeper than that? The Browns have their guy, and he can get them wherever they need to go.

Four Cleveland Browns Players Who Could Be Cut During Training Camp — Brandon Little, Browns Digest

"“A look at a few current members of the Cleveland Browns who could be cut down the road during the team’s training camp.”"

Little doesn’t have any surprises here and the biggest name is easily Mack Wilson. The former fifth-round pick is in danger this offseason and will need a big camp to keep his spot in Cleveland.

Baker Mayfield wisely betting on himself, again

Ever since his days in the NCAA, Baker Mayfield has been betting on himself and winning. He twice walked onto a collegiate campus and won the starting quarterback job — and even the Heisman. Now, he’s being patient as he awaits a new deal and that should again pay off for him.
