No. 4: JC Tretter, Center
For the last four years, JC Tretter has started every single game for the Cleveland Browns at center. While his physical traits won’t blow you away, he has become an extremely consistent player that has found the ability to stay on the field.
Tretter may not be the strongest or the fastest guy on the field, but he is always the smartest. Physical traits are extremely important in the NFL, but intelligence can make up a lot.
The big question now, how many more years does Tretter have? At age 30, the question must be asked if he can continue to perform at an extremely high level. Good news for Browns fans, having extreme intelligence will only help prolong his career.
The Browns are in an ideal spot. Tretter is under contract for two more full seasons, so they will be able to evaluate if there is a decline. Although I think he is likely past his prime, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have three or four more seasons left in him.
When it comes time for a new contract, the only thing that will matter then is if his asking price is too much. You can’t put a value on what someone brings to the locker room, but in a league with a salary cap, you must be careful to not have too many locker room guys who can’t live up to their contract.
