Cleveland Browns: Boston Globe writer disrespects Cleveland in rankings
By Nick Swanson
Cleveland Browns rank 16th on Boston Globe’s Ben Volin’s football destinations much to fans chagrin
The Boston Globe’s Senior NFL writer, Ben Volin, released his rankings of the NFL’s 30 cities as “football travel destinations” on Saturday, and fans of the Cleveland Browns tore him apart on social media.
Volin ranked Cleveland as a below-average football travel destination, coming in at 16th on his list. The line that Browns fans took offense to came at the beginning of his short description of the city and its football atmosphere.
Reading, “there’s not much of a tailgating scene,” it caused countless comments and responses proving the contrary. Volin has since retracted the line and issued an apology to Browns fans everywhere.
Volin’s critique now reads more like a knock on the dreary Cleveland weather instead of on the fans and gameday atmosphere.
"“The weather can be miserable, but early-season visits are great. Downtown Cleveland is fun for a 48-hour trip — check out the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, catch an Indians game, eat a nice dinner, and see the Browns on Sunday.”"
The atmosphere in Cleveland is undoubtedly unlike any other. The history of the sport runs deep and goes right through the heart of Cleveland, Ohio. The loyalty that runs in the heart of every Browns fan is clear as they show up rain or shine, during 11-5 seasons or 0-16 seasons.
For a Browns fan, questioning loyalty or fandom is the ultimate form of disrespect and NFL fans have come to realize it as Cleveland has been thrust into the national eye once again.
With high hopes and expectations for the 2021 season, you can expect the fandom to continue to run rampant through Cleveland, through Ohio, and through the country as a whole as the feel-good football story of the 21st century unfolds before our very eyes.
The Browns are on their way to a potentially magical season and the fans are a huge part of it.
