Cleveland Browns: 20 practice squad candidates for 2021 season
By Sam Penix
Defensive back
A.J. Green
The Browns made Green (now the only person of his name in the AFC North) the highest-paid undrafted free agent in history last year (until Marvin Wilson topped him), but that did not guarantee him a roster spot, as he was cut following training camp. He has a better shot at making the team this year, but again, there are no guarantees.
Kiondre Thomas
Thomas is a really good athlete who seems like an excellent project player with the potential to make the roster in 2022.
Elijah Benton
Benton was a member of the practice squad for all of 2020, and was even active for one game. The safety position will be used more this season, so keeping some on the practice squad will be important.
Special Teams
Chase McLaughlin
Cody Parkey was initially the emergency kicker in 2020, but he quickly replaced Austin Seibert on the active roster. Matthew McCrane was then on the practice squad for the rest of the season, but he is now a free agent.
For his career, McLaughlin is 31 of 32 on extra points and 22 of 28 on field goals, including 4-5 on attempts over 50 yards. That’s good experience to have in case of emergency.
