3 Cleveland Browns losing leverage on roster spots
By Greg Newland
2. Rashard Higgins – Wide Receiver
It’s never a bad thing to be super close to the franchise quarterback, and for two years now, it seems like Rashard Higgins has been brought back because Baker Mayfield loves him. Don’t get me wrong, he has been a good wide receiver for the Cleveland Browns, but he keeps coming back on team-friendly deals.
After a disappointing 2019 and being in Freddie Kitchens doghouse much of the season, Higgins could find himself in another frustrating situation. Peoples-Jones continues to put on a clinic in training camp and is undoubtedly the third receiver on the roster right now.
What’s even more frustrating for Higgins, he has an injury that is keeping him off the field. While it’s disappointing that he is injured, this is more of what Peoples-Jones is doing, and not as much what Higgins isn’t doing.
I don’t think the Browns will look to cut Higgins, but I think he could end asking for his release. With the emergence of Peoples-Jones, the addition of Anthony Schwartz, and an offense that is traditionally in two tight-end sets, there is likely a better situation for him elsewhere in the league.
With Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry in situations where the team can move on after 2021 with relatively no dead cap money, the Browns could start the complete overhaul now with the release of Higgins before the start of the season.
