Five Cleveland Browns players who showed out in Preseason Week 1

The Cleveland Browns opened up the 2021 NFL Preseason with a 23-13 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars, and while the backups have plenty of work to do, there were some players who stood out among the rest. Here are five in particular who boosted their stock with their performances Saturday night.

5. WR Davion Davis

Davion Davis is the 89th man on the roster, as he was brought in to replace the retired Derrick Willies. That would imply he is in camp only to provide a warm body, but apparently, no one told Davis.

He caught four of his five targets for 58 yards, including a Randy Moss-esque 27-yard touchdown. Davis has practically zero chance at making the roster, but playing for the Browns isn’t the only thing at stake for him and many others.

He’s fighting for a spot on the practice squad, or he’s auditioning for another franchise. And plays like the one he made against the Jags will get him noticed. Davis is 5-11, 190 pounds with subpar athleticism, but those deficiencies can be overcome with consistency. If he can be trusted to bring in tough catches, he’ll have a place in the league, even if it isn’t in Cleveland.

The Browns are in a unique position where they don’t have to be entirely concerned with finding depth; they can also be intentional about showcasing players for other teams in order to help advance their careers. The NFL is a business, and relationships matter.
