Five Cleveland Browns players who showed out in Preseason Week 2

The Cleveland Browns extended their preseason winning streak to three games with a win over the New York Giants on Sunday.

It wasn’t a pretty game by any means, but the team got the job done, and there were some solid performances from certain players during the process as well.

Here are five who should be feeling good about themselves heading into next week.

5. P Jamie Gillan

Punter Jamie Gillan had a great rookie year, but he was maddeningly inconsistent during his sophomore campaign in 2020. The Browns need a bounce-back season from him, and his performance against New York was encouraging. The offense had an off day, so Gillan was called upon four times, landing one of his punts inside the 10-yard line. He averaged 45.5 yards per punt, and only one was returned, the Giants C.J. Board netting zero yards that time. Both of Gillan’s punts against Jacksonville were returned, though for only 14 total yards.

Punting is far from glamorous, but it’s an important part of the game, because field position can be the difference between a win and a loss when teams are evenly matched. Gillan must keep improving, but he seems to be on the right track. He doesn’t have any competition in camp, but that doesn’t mean he can become complacent.

On a side note, his holding seems to be improving, and the Browns kicking duo of Cody Parkey and Chase McLaughlin have had a good training camp and preseason. Gillan hadn’t held for kicks when entering the league, so that’s good to see.
