4 Positions Cleveland Browns could upgrade with roster cuts
By Greg Newland
With teams set to cut another 27 players before week one, the Cleveland Browns could look to improve their roster in a few key areas.
The Cleveland Browns have started their preseason perfect, with two wins vs the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the New York Giants. Starters have seen very limited time in either game, but head coach Kevin Stefanski seems more than confident he will have his guys ready to play.
Is it likely to see starters in the final preseason game on Sunday vs. the Atlanta Falcons? I would think Baker Mayfield and the starting offensive line will get a few reps, but don’t expect to see guys like Odell Beckham, Jarvis Landry, or Nick Chubb until Week 1.
The defense has been slightly banged up, so I don’t think you’ll see a ton of starters there either. Grant Delpit is a guy that could use some snaps, but I expect the team to be overly cautious on putting him out there.
Just this week the roster moved down to 80, but that means there are still 27 guys who won’t make the final roster. Not only will the Browns be cutting good football players, but other teams around the league will also as well. That means the Browns could have a chance to upgrade their roster in the open market.
Here are four positions the Cleveland Browns should at least explore.
No. 4 – Kicker
After the recent placement of Cody Parkey to injured reserved (IR), that leaves Chase McLaughlin as the next man up. So far McLaughlin has done a fine job in the preseason, but with so many kicking issues the last few years, fans are on edge about the situation.
Plenty of teams will have two kickers throughout camp and the preseason, and hardly any will carry two into the regular season. Whether any of them are any good or not remains to be seen, but the Cleveland Browns should have some options if they want to explore.
