Cleveland Browns surprise cut No. 1 – Sheldon Day, Defensive Tackle

At this point, it’s still unclear if Sheldon Day will or won’t return to the Cleveland Browns for the 2021 season.  There is some belief he could be a guy that comes back after moving guys to injured reserved, but I’m not sure I believe that logic.

Day got a lot of snaps with the first-team group throughout the preseason and training camp, but unfortunately, he is at a position where the Browns have a ton of depth.  Keep in mind, depth and talent are two different things.

Defensive tackle is likely the weakest spot on the Browns defense currently, but they had six or seven guys who can be NFL-caliber players.

Malik Jackson and Andrew Billings appear to have solidified themselves as the starters with Jordan Elliott and Tommy Togiai as the backups.  Many believed Day would be the fifth defensive tackle on the depth chart, but at this moment, Malik McDowell has overtaken that position.

There is no doubt that Day is talented enough to be on an NFL roster, but I’m not sure I see him coming back to the Browns.

When you look at the five names above him currently, this is just a classic situation where a team had to let go of a really good player.
