NFL teams trimmed their rosters to 53 players on Tuesday, and there were some names the Cleveland Browns should be interested in claiming

Tuesday was the day for NFL teams to trim their rosters down to 53 players and the Cleveland Browns made all their moves more than an hour before the 4:00 PM deadline.

There were several surprise cuts, including the release of defensive tackle Sheldon Day — although he’s not subject to waivers so he might be coming back.

As for the waiver wire, there could also be some names out there for the Browns to consider putting in a claim for. Here we look at five such players who should be in consideration for Cleveland.

5. Brian Johnson could be the new Cleveland Browns kicker

Chase McLaughlin isn’t a terrible kicker by any means, but he has had an awful time sticking with one team. In two seasons, he’s kicked for five different clubs and the Browns are about to be No. 6 — unless they decide to bring someone else in.

One of the reasons they could consider moving on is the missed extra point from McLaughlin against Atlanta. It’s hard to judge a player on one kick alone but he already came in with some concern due to his 78.6 career percentage and that miss might have brought back some of the same frustration they had when watching Austin Seibert kick (although the ball sounded so good coming off his foot).

McLaughlin also seemed to leave the ball short of the end zone on kickoffs, and if that wasn’t by design, it could be an issue as well. Should the Browns share these concerns, Brian Johnson is a name to watch.

A rookie from Virginia Tech, Johnson had two touchbacks on four kicks while also going 2-of-2 including a 54-yarder on his field-goal attempts. He added three extra points in as many tries. It’s not a lot to go on, but he could be worth a shot since he did show some promise.
