3 Reasons Cleveland Browns shouldn’t panic after week 1 loss
By Greg Newland
The Cleveland Browns didn’t want to lose their Week 1 game, but there are plenty of good things that happened. Don’t panic just yet.
We all knew the Cleveland Browns had an extremely tough matchup in week one vs. the defending AFC champions.
And although a loss is never easy to swallow, there are zero reasons to panic as a Browns fan. Come Tuesday morning, this one will be a lot easier to swallow.
Below are three reasons why fans should not panic.
No. 3 reason Cleveland Browns shouldn’t panic – This defense is improved
I know the Cleveland Browns just gave up 33 points and lost a close game, but it can’t be overlooked how much better this defense is, especially in the secondary. Remember, Ronnie Harrison was ejected in the first quarter and Grant Delpit was already out.
The defensive line only ended up with two sacks, but Patrick Mahomes was being flushed around all day. Unfortunately, he thrives on moving around and made some incredible plays. On most quarterbacks in the league, they would have struggled with the constant pressure. The entire group also did a nice job of controlling the line of scrimmage all day and not giving up any big run plays.
The linebackers did struggle. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah had a few rookie moments, and Mack Wilson looked silly in pursuit a few times. There were also several situations where the scheme put a linebacker on Travis Kelce and Mahomes exposed it.
Last but certainly not least, that 75-yard pass to Tyreek Hill wouldn’t have been stopped by anyone in the league. John Johnson was a stud all day, and I hate that play happened to him. Mahomes through a complete duck, Johnson was in perfect position, and Hill made one of the best adjustments I’ve ever seen to bust a huge play.
This defense has a ton of new starters and is only going to get better, and, they won’t be going against a Chiefs offense the rest of the regular season.
