Browns-o-centric happenings around the NFL
Cleveland Browns offensive linemen succeeding around the NFL
The Browns have produced an amazing number of offensive linemen around the league. Cameron Erving was an acceptable starting left tackle for Carolina in game one. They won the game, and Darnold was sacked only once, but Erving struggled in pass protection against the Jets.
With Cleveland, he was a naive rookie who wanted to play all five offensive line positions, and the Browns coaching staff was naive enough to let him try. As a result, he never learned to be good at any one position.
Austin Corbett is a highly regarded guard for the Rams. Pro Football Focus loves him. With the Browns, it’s inexplicable why he did not succeed. They used the patented Cam Erving technique of moving him from tackle to guard to tackle and were trying to convert him to center when they dealt him away. Gee, why didn’t that work?
Guard Colby Gossett looked good in the exhibition games this summer and went to Atlanta via waivers and got in a few snaps for the Falcons, his first live game action since 2018. Starter Jalen Mayfield had a hard time, and there is some talk that Gossett might even start. Wouldn’t that be something?
Tackle Kendall Lamm saw game action for Tennessee Titans, but allowed a sack and was unimpressive.
Center Austin Reiter has been signed by the New Orleans Saints practice squad. Does anyone know why he was cut from the Browns? He started one game for the Browns and did a great job, and poof, was cut the next season.
Former first-round pick and six-time Pro Bowler Alex Mack is still playing at a high level at age 35. He’s the starting center for the San Francisco 49ers. No complaints about him leaving. He was a true pro and did things the right way.
Former Brown Kevin Zeitler has set up shop in Baltimore next to Villanueva. That was the best Raven free agent signing in this fan’s highly biased opinion.
