Browns fans should separate Odell Beckham from Odell Beckham’s contract

Other reasons to hate Odell Beckham

Some people hate OBJ for being too popular. Wouldn’t it be great if the rest of us had just a few fans like the ones OBJ has? If you are an OBJ denier and do not believe he is popular, here are some numbers for you. He has 14.5 million followers on Instagram on 4.1 million followers on Twitter!

Despite his injury, OBJ is still on the National Football League Player Association Top 50 NFL Player Jersey Sales List March 1, 2021-May 31, 2021, one of the three Cleveland players on the list. Baker Mayfield is No. 29, Nick Chubb is No. 31 and OBJ is No. 48.

Others feel he is too politically outspoken. He definitely has a knack for generating controversy. Beckham had the audacity to design a T-Shirt that had the simple message that said, “VOTE,” which seems to be to be rather neutral because probably all Americans should consider voting, irrespective of their political party.

However, asking Americans to vote can be offensive if OBJ makes the request. Many Twitter fans (using the term loosely, of course), were outraged. What is offensive or inappropriate about voting in Greater Cleveland and Ohio? Could it be that these angry Twitter fans are simply Pittsburgh fans helping us out?

This fan bought a T-shirt because it is a positive message that does not feel threatening in any way, even though there are very few if any candidates that this writer voted for that Mr. Beckham also voted for. For example, if Atilla the Hun were on the ballot, this fan would probably vote for him.

Still, others feel that OBJ might be sabotaging the career of Baker Mayfield and the Browns. After all, the Browns were 7-8-1 in 2018 without OBJ, 6-10 in 2019 with OBJ, so what more proof could you want?

You can make it even more technical by quoting Mayfield’s stats when throwing to other receivers versus throwing to OBJ, but face it, 2019 was a lousy year.

What Tommy Twelvepak (the slightly more bellicose and less reasonable cousin of Joe Sixpack) believes is that football players should play through injuries that require surgery, and if they don’t perform, it’s because they are lazy.

Tommy was absolutely not impressed that OBJ played the entire 2019 season with an abdominal tear that required surgery and that he still produced 1,000 receiving yards for a terrible 6-10 team.

OBJ made Baker Mayfield worse, in fact, because Mayfield locked in on him too much. As soon as OBJ was injured in 2020, that’s when Mayfield’s performance took off. Come to think of it, that is pretty much what Colin Cowherd over at FoxSports seems to think, also. Could it be that Cowherd is related to Tommy Twelvepak?

By the way, well-meaning fans will scold DPD and suggest that we should just ignore Cowherd and maybe he will go away. That isn’t going to work. FoxSports is not going to vanish, and the fact of that matter is that this author listens to FoxSports all the time, agree or disagree.

Let’s not leave OBJ and Mayfield to just accept unfair criticism without hitting back. Nope, we’re hitting back and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
