Odell Beckham: Browns reporter may be on to something
By Greg Newland
The chemistry between Odell Beckham and Baker Mayfield has never clicked. One Cleveland Browns reporter suggest a trade before the deadline.
One of the biggest question marks coming into the 2021 season for the Cleveland Browns was the chemistry between Odell Beckham Jr. and Baker Mayfield. It doesn’t appear that Beckham has stopped being an elite wide receiver in the NFL, but through five games it does appear that the chemistry may never be there.
Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com published an article on Wednesday night suggesting that it may be time for the Browns to move on and trade Beckham by the November 2nd trade deadline.
Two months ago, I was totally against this. I had full confidence that Beckham and Mayfield would figure out any issues that they had.
Now, I’m starting to think that she may be right on this one. Not only have the stats through three games been bad, but they’re also getting worse as the season progresses.
Week three (OBJ’s return from injury); nine targets, five catches for 77 yards. Not awful, but a few throws felt forced. Week 4; seven targets, two catches for 27 yards. Mayfield missed Beckham for two easy touchdowns vs. the Vikings. Week 5; three targets, two catches for 20 yards.
Cabot hits the nail on the head with this statement
"“It’s not that Beckham, who will turn 29 next month, isn’t still the superstar receiver who makes eye-popping catches and can produce 1,000-yard seasons. It’s just that it’s not happening here and it might never.”"
At this point, why should the Cleveland Browns and OBJ continue to force the relationship?
I know many are worried about how Jarvis Landry would react to a trade of Beckham, but the bottom line is, the NFL is a business.
As much as it pains me to say, the Browns should seriously consider trading the superstar if the package in return is right. I’d be willing to bet this will be his last season in Cleveland, might as well let him have a fresh start now.
