Cleveland Browns expect to get one starting tackle back
By Greg Newland
The Cleveland Browns expect to get at least one starting offensive tackle back on Thursday. Solid protection will be huge with a backup quarterback.
With all the injuries in the last two weeks, the Cleveland Browns needed some good news. They could finally get some as it sounds like starting left tackle, Jedrick Wills will return to the starting lineup.
Wills has been in and out battling an ankle injury, but with two and a half weeks of full rest, let’s hope he will be close to 100 percent.
It sounds like Jack Conklin (right tackle) will miss his second straight game with a knee injury. However, this puts the Browns in a position to start Blake Hance at right tackle, instead of James Hudson who struggled last week.
It’s not easy to just flip-flop around on the line, but Brian Stainbrook reported that Hance took snaps at both left and right tackle in practice this week. There’s no doubt he should be the next man up if Conklin isn’t ready to play tonight, and this is great news for Case Keenum.
Baker Mayfield was sacked a total of 26 times in 2020, and through six weeks of 2021 has already been sacked 18 times. 14 of those 18 sacks have occurred in the last two weeks when the tackle position has been a revolving door.
With pressure comes a lot of things, but interceptions, fumbles, sacks, and injuries have killed the Browns the last four games, but the last two specifically.
With Wills back and a must-win game, let’s hope the offensive line steps up in a big way tonight and that Kevin Stefanski comes up with a better game plan that includes a lot of quick passes, screenplays, and easy completions to get Keenum rolling early.
