Cleveland Browns potential Free Agent: Cam Newton, Free Agent

The last name on our list wouldn’t cost the Browns anything in trade since he’s currently not on any team. Cam Newton, who was the No. 1 overall pick out of Auburn back in 2011 was released by the New England Patriots ahead of Week 1 as they elected to go with rookie Mac Jones as their starter.

For anyone who wants to dismiss Newton since he was let go in favor of a rookie, they should know that Jones was simply a much better fit for the offense Josh McDaniels runs. Newton can still play and while he’s not the guy we saw take the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl, he can still move the chains with his arm and legs.

Last year in New England, Newton had 2,657 yards passing while completing 65.8 percent of his throws. He did have just eight touchdown passes but added 592 yards and 12 scores on the ground.

So while it’s true the Browns wouldn’t be getting the same guy who once held the NFL MVP, they would be getting someone who defenses have to respect since he has a strong arm and can take off and move the ball with his legs.

Even if it’s as a backup to Case Keenum, kicking the tires on Newton might not be the worst idea.
