Move No. 3 – Start negotiations with Jadeveon Clowney

I think most people were excited about the addition of Jadeveon Clowney this offseason, but there was still some concern with how motivated he was and how durable he was.

The jury is slightly out on durability, he appears to be working through some nagging injuries, but through eight games he has only been sidelined once, which is a big improvement for him. And when he has been in the game, he has been a major force.

In seven games Clowney has 3.5 sacks, 18 tackles, and eight tackles for loss. Not only has he been an extremely effective pass rusher, but he is also an elite-run defender which can’t be overlooked. He still has the No. 1 overall draft talent and he’s had a great season after a disappointing year in Tennessee.

Clowney came to Cleveland with a few fans upset after reports came out saying the Browns were his highest offer in 2020, but he didn’t want to be in Cleveland. But I think he has since lost that thought and fans have moved on as he and Myles Garrett have quickly connected on and off the field.

Now that the Browns have $15 million in cap space they weren’t expecting, I think it would be a great idea to consider trying to sign Clowney before free agency when his stock could skyrocket with edge rusher always being the highest demanded player.

Why not give him a two-year extension in that $12-15 million range? He has proven he’s worth the money and if you wait until the end of the season the price could adjust to $15-20 million per year. There are certainly some risks with extending Clowney, but the duo of he and Garrett has been extremely effective at times thus far and should only improve.
