Baker Mayfield lighting up the Bengals in Week 9
By Randy Gurzi
Baker Mayfield seems just fine without Odell Beckham, Jr. as he and Donovan Peoples-Jones just hooked up for a long touchdown against Cincinnati
A whole lot of drama was put in the rearview this week as the Cleveland Browns decided it was time to move on from Odell Beckham, Jr. As soon as the decision was announced, the spotlight was placed on Baker Mayfield.
The star quarterback was blamed in the OBJ debacle as a reason for No. 13 wanting to leave. Clearly, the two were never on the same page and some wanted to pile on Mayfield after the team decided to move on.
Others pointed to the fact that No. 6 was much more dangerous without OBJ and so far in their first game apart, Mayfield is looking to be just fine.
In fact, he just lit the Cincinnati Bengals up as he found Donovan Peoples-Jones deep for a 60-yard touchdown.
That play put the Browns up 21-7 roughly midway through the second quarter. As for their other two scores, Nick Chubb ran in a short touchdown and Denzel Ward picked off a pass that he took back 100-yards for a touchdown.
Cleveland continued to play well as cornerback A.J. Green then recovered a fumble on the ensuing drive to get Baker the ball once again.
For whatever reason, Mayfield just continues to shine without OBJ. He sees the field better, makes better decisions, and gets everyone else involved.
Whatever happens with Beckham going forward — even if he blows up elsewhere — this was still the best move for them.
