Cleveland Browns Question Needing Answered No. 1 – What is Joe Woods’s identity on defense?

The biggest question I continue to have is what exactly is the identity of Joe Woods?

Is he a guy that wants to get pressure with four and sit in zone coverage taking away the big play? Or does he want to bring pressure and play-tight coverage making life difficult for opposing quarterbacks?

What’s been successful this season is when the Browns bring pressure and tighten up coverage.  Burrow was sacked five times on Sunday, and he was hit multiple other times. There’s no doubt the clock in his head was running at least a second fast which led to multiple mistakes.

It’s easy to throw shade at Woods for being inconsistent, but he has continued to deal with injuries at cornerback. Greg Newsome, Denzel Ward, and Greedy Williams have all missed times, and it’s extremely difficult to play tight coverage with backup corners.

With another young quarterback and a struggling offense, Woods needs to bring the heat early and often. Troy Hill had two sacks last week and Grant Delpit has also been an extremely effective blitzer in the past.

Bringing pressure from all over the field can make things difficult for a rookie quarterback who still isn’t processing things as quickly as a veteran.

Expect this week to be a low-scoring affair, but Woods must have his defense ready to play again if the Browns want a good chance at coming away with a victory.
