Baker Mayfield, Cleveland Browns struggling early in New England
By Greg Newland
Things keep going from bad to worse for the Cleveland Browns. Baker Mayfield and the defense is struggling early and the team is already in a 21-7 hole.
The Cleveland Browns offense went right down the field on the first drive of the game, but the game in New England is quickly starting to get out of hand.
After a long drive given up by the defense that allowed the Patriots to quickly tie the game at 7-7, Baker Mayfield telegraphed a pass that was intercepted and returned to the Cleveland four-yard line. Just one play later the Patriots walked into the end zone.
The Browns quickly got the ball back and again had no success. The drive ended on third down with Anthony Schwartz breaking up a pass that looked to be Mayfield’s second interception of the day. The only saving grace thus far was a tremendous punt by Jamie Gillan that stuck the Patriots inside the one-yard line, but the defense ended up allowing a touchdown after a life-sucking drive.
Not only is the Browns defense struggling to slow down the Patriots running game, but Mac Jones is also able to complete a pass whenever and wherever he wants.
The Browns now find themselves down 21-7 with no rhythm on offense and a defense that couldn’t stop a wet paper bag at the moment. Remember, the Baltimore Ravens already lost this week opening up the AFC North once again, but the Browns are on their way to 5-5 and a slim shot at the playoffs.
Kevin Stefanski needs to get back to running the football and play-action, but it will be very difficult given the hole the Browns are already in.
