Cleveland Browns player with no production No. 3: John Johnson

One of the offseason additions I was most excited about this year was John Johnson, the ball-hawking safety that Andrew Berry was able to take from the best defense in 2020, the Los Angeles Rams.

Things started out great for Johnson in Cleveland. During camp and the preseason, he was the guy that stood out the most and was making a ton of plays. He was given the green dot because of his leadership and communication skills, and many thought he was poised for an All-Pro type year.

It’s been one of those bad to worse type things for Johnson. The secondary has been by far the most inconsistent piece of the puzzle. In games vs. the Vikings and Bengals, it looked like the Browns had one of the best secondaries in the NFL, and then on Sunday, it looked like four practice squad guys lining up back there.

The bottom line, there have been far too many botched coverages and wide-open touchdowns. Think back to the Chargers game where twice a wide receiver was running wide open for a touchdown. And I don’t know about you, but if it’s less than third and 15, I’m to the point where I assume the opposing team is just going to convert.

I’m not saying the secondary troubles are all Johnson’s fault, but as the leader of that group, I’m placing a lot of the blame on him.
