Baker Mayfield knows Jarvis Landry wants the ball more and he agrees that the Cleveland Browns need this to happen in order to find success

Jarvis Landry was one of the first players the Cleveland Browns signed back in 2018 in their attempt at building back the Browns to relevance. He was famously recorded giving some of his teammates a rather intense and to the point pep talk in that first Cleveland training camp that summer.

Some have discussed Landry as being a culture changer for the Browns and bringing a more focused attention to winning since he arrived.

This season Landry has been hit by the injury bug and has missed four games. In the games he has played in, he hasn’t exactly lit up the box score. He still hasn’t recorded a touchdown and he’s maxed out at 71 yards receiving on five catches in one game. He has  a grand total of 219 receiving this season. He also is collecting a nice paycheck, as he’s on a $14 million dollar contract.

This past week the receiver was concerned about not having been part of the Browns offense more and getting more passes thrown his way. This was reported by Camryn Justice of WEWS Channel 5.

Since then Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield was asked about Landry’s comments and responded as reported by Nate Ulrich from the Akron Beacon Journal.

Mayfield talked about executing the plays that they are already running better and finding ways to get Landry the ball more. Hopefully, starting in this upcoming game against the Detroit Lions Sunday, Mayfield and Landry can get more on the same page.

In the big loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers three weeks ago, Mayfield tried hitting the talented wide receiver 10 times. They connected on five of those attempts. But several attempts were dropped by Landry and on the biggest catch on the day, he fumbled the ball at the 20 yard line, when it felt like the Browns were going in for the go ahead score and win.

Instead it was heartache city, and since that moment a lot has happened within the Browns organization. Landry’s former teammate Odell Beckham Jr. demanded his release from the team because he too felt he wasn’t getting served the football enough. The two wide receivers have know each other since their college days at LSU.

With the recent comments from Landry, could this be another indication that he might be wanting out as well?

With Mayfield suggesting they aren’t going to reinvent the wheel with their play calling, but instead try harder to get Landry and others the ball more, I think that all sounds good, but when Mayfield has been forced to involve certain players more, consciously, or subconsciously it hasn’t turned out for the best for the team or Mayfield.

Landry’s effect on this Browns team might be in the tail end of it’s benefit. You couple that with the fact that his best friend Beckham just forced his way out of town, one really has to question Landry’s buy in to the concept of team at this time of the season.

I certainly hope that Mayfield and the Browns coaching staff don’t try to force the issue and rather stick to improving as a squad overall, as they head into these last seven games of the season.
