Cleveland Browns Week 11 grades: A win is win no matter how ugly
By John Suchan
Cleveland Browns Special Teams Grade: D
For the most part, the special team’s unit in Cleveland has been very reliable. However, on this Sunday they weren’t.
The biggest culprit was “In Chase We Trust” McLaughlin, the Browns placekicker who was surprisingly bad on the day. He missed both an extra point (which was blocked) and a very makeable 46-yard attempt. It was his first miss on an extra point after going 25 for 25. He’s now 14 for 16 on field goals. Not bad but the team could have used those extra four points in the close victory.
Browns punter Jamie Gillian had a busy day punting five times but only averaged just under 38 yards on the kicks. That type of average isn’t going to cut it, especially in these late-season games that mean even more to making a run to the playoffs.
The return game had all-purpose rookie Demetric Felton snagging the punts but he didn’t go anywhere and has honestly been a bit disappointing the last few games. He had one return of 12 yards, which is nothing to write home about.
Special teams will have their moments next weekend and hopefully, the pressure to produce won’t be too much for a group that has played relatively well overall.
