Cleveland Browns: 3 trade targets for 2022 season
By Greg Newland
Target No. 1 – Derek Carr, Quarterback
Another interesting name that I love, is Derek Carr. The 30-year old quarterback has had mediocre success in the NFL, but never a roster like what the Cleveland Browns could offer. While many believe the Browns are locked into Mayfield being the quarterback in 2022 because of the fifth-year option, the Raiders are the one team that could change that.
Would they be interested in Mayfield for a season? I don’t think many would question that Carr is a better quarterback, but the Raiders haven’t had a winning season since 2016 and may be ready for something new.
The Browns could get Carr and sign him to a new deal to see how he looks in the Kevin Stefanski offense. The Raiders will have Mayfield for about the same price as well as a likely draft pick and see what they have. If things go similar or worse as with Carr, they still have the pick and can start fresh in 2023.
The Raiders would certainly be taking a risk here, but both teams believe they have the rosters to win now, so they may be willing to jump out on a limb to see if Mayfield has more talent than the Browns have been able to extract.
Another team that is in a similar situation as the Raiders is the Atlanta Falcons. Matt Ryan would have to restructure his contract but could be another name to watch. Given their age, Carr would be the better option at the moment.
