4 Cleveland Browns who have proven their worth in 2021
By Greg Newland
1. Cleveland Browns CB – Denzel Ward
Coming into this season I was a firm believer that Baker Mayfield and Denzel Ward had to prove their worth in order to get an extension before their fifth-year option. If you asked me six months ago, I would have said Mayfield had a better shot at an extension this year over Ward, only because of injuries.
That could not be further from the truth. Although hindered by injuries, Mayfield just hasn’t found his groove this year and has really struggled to move the offense. Ward did miss one game and a majority of another but has been an elite cornerback the last two weeks.
If you remember back to the Bengals game, he jump-started that routing with a pick-six on their first drive and had two of the biggest plays of the game on the Ravens game-tying drive attempt in Week 14.
I still would make sure Ward makes it the rest of the season without another injury, but it’s time to lock Ward up and pay him like the top-five cornerback he is. Injury is still a huge concern, but he has proven this season for the most part that he can endure a full NFL season.
In today’s game, a good pass rusher is the most important part of a defense, with a lockdown corner being right after it.
The Cleveland Browns are in great shape with Garrett and Ward in the long-term plans.
