Cleveland Browns Big Name Free Agent Target No. 1

Tyrann Mathieu

What would make the Browns secondary even better? Adding the “Honey Badger” Tyrann Mathieu, that’s what.

Mathieu will turn just 30 in May and is still an elite defender in the NFL. He is a huge ball hawk that would help get the defense off the field when they are supposed to, and issue the Browns defense had throughout 2021.

In 2021 with the Chiefs, Mathieu put together the fourth Pro Bowl season of his career. In 16 games, he had three interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown. He racked up 76 tackles (two for a loss), a sack, three fumbles recoveries, and six pass deflections. While the Chiefs defense wasn’t that great this season, Mathieu and company made it work, and now the team is in the divisional round of the playoffs.

He was drafted in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. He would spend the first five years of his career in Arizona, and then was released in 2018 due to not wanting to take a pay cut. He went to Houston for a season before signing a three-year, $42 million deal with the Chiefs in 2019.

The Browns won’t likely retain current safety Ronnie Harrison, so getting a guy like Mathieu to replace him would make a pretty big splash. Then, you can pair the Honey Badger with John Johnson III and allow JJ3 to work closer to the line of scrimmage and it adds up to a pretty stout secondary.
