Cleveland Browns: New Orleans trade target No. 2: Wil Lutz, Kicker

Kickers aren’t traded very often but then again, teams don’t find themselves in a perpetual state of need for a reliable kicker the way the Browns have in recent years. In 2020, they thought they found something in Cody Parkey but after he was hurt in 2021, they went with Chase McLaughlin.

The well-traveled kicker was solid to start the season, going 9-for-9 through Week 6. Then from Week 7 on, he was just 6-of-12 and seemed to miss a kick every week. Cleveland stuck with him but that could have been due to a lack of options.

Looking ahead to this 2022 season, the Browns have to make a move at the position. There’s a chance they could go after a free agent in the offseason or even try and draft a kicker the way the Cincinnati Bengals did. Or, they could think outside the box and see if the New Orleans Saints want to trade Wil Lutz.

One of the best kickers in the game, Lutz is scheduled to count for more than $5.5 million against the cap. In a post-June 1 trade, moving him could save them around $3.65 million of that money.

Cleveland would have to be willing to absorb a huge contract for a kicker but Lutz is one of the best in the business. He has converted on 86.6 percent of his career field goals with a long of 58. He’s also shown that he’s not bothered by clutch moments, something the Browns would love to have in their kicker.
