5 pending free agents in Super Bowl LVI Cleveland Browns should target in 2022
By John Suchan
The Super Bowl Sunday will feature many free agents that could be on the Cleveland Browns radar. Let’s look at five of those players.
While you’re watching the Super Bowl on Sunday when the Los Angeles Rams take on the Cincinnati Bengals, you should pay attention to several players on both teams that will enter the free agency market soon. The Rams have around 14 unrestricted free agents where they can sign with another team in the NFL, the Bengals have 19 of them. For comparison’s sake, the Cleveland Browns currently have 11 unrestricted free agents.
So, the Bengals really have the potential to have a lot of turnover in personnel going into next season. If they win the Super Bowl, one would imagine they’d attract some of those free agents to return and also likely draw interest from other players around the league.
One of the free agents that is available after the Super Bowl for the Rams is former Browns player Odell Beckham Jr. who left the team midseason. There isn’t much belief that Beckham would want to return to Cleveland, but there will be several players on the Rams that might be looking for a better contract deal and the Browns might be a good landing spot.
Let’s look at both teams and a few players that might be targeted by the team as free agency gets started in a few weeks.
Cleveland Browns SB Free Agent No. 1: Sebastian Joseph-Day, LA Rams, DT
The Browns will need help on the defensive line next season and Sebastian Joseph-Day might be a good free agent pick up by the team. He’s been in the league since 2018 when he was drafted in the sixth round out of Rutgers. He’s played three seasons with the Ram as a regular starter. This past season he suffered a chest injury that landed him on the injured reserve list.
There’s a good chance though that he’ll play in the Super Bowl after being out since October. He was off to a great start this season with 38 tackles and three sacks in only seven games.
Joseph-Day’s contract paid him a bit over $2.1 million this past year. With the Browns likely losing a few players on their defensive line like Malik McDowell and Malik Jackson, they will need to find some solid talent and Day would be an excellent pickup.
The one advantage Cleveland has with these free agents from the Rams is that two former Rams Tony Hill and John Johnson III signed with the team last free-agency season. So, there should be some appeal to consider Cleveland if you were a Ram.
