Cleveland Browns Rumor No. 2: New contracts for Denzel Ward, David Njoku, and/or Jadeveon Clowney?

The Browns are currently sitting at around $27 million in cap space, which ranks them at 11th most in the NFL. If the team ends up parting ways with Jarvis Landry, it will free up another $16 million which would move the Browns up to 6th most cap space in the league.

For Denzel Ward, a contract extension is not an “if” it happens but rather “when” it will happen. Ward is one of the leagues top corners and the Browns will pay him as such. He will cash in a new deal at somewhere around $19-$20 million per year, likely over a 4-5 year span. Whether it happens this offseason, during the 2022 NFL season or next offseaon, it will happen and Ward will be rewarded for his outstanding play.

The former 4th overall selection in the 2018 draft is set to become a free agent in 2023, so he seems to be on the backburner as of right now. The current focus is most likely on David Njoku and Jadeveon Clowney, as both players are unrestricted free agents this offseason. The team is interested in bringing back both guys, without a doubt.

For Njoku, the Browns are prepared to extend him as soon as possible. Not only are they willing to extend him, Cleveland is ready to pay him double-digit millions on a new deal according to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot.

Njoku, 25, has never produced on a consistent basis for the Browns due to injuries and playing time. His physical ability and sky-high potential is obviously very appealing to this organization. In 2021, with down quarterback play, Njoku still managed to tally 36 catches for 475 yards and four touchdowns as a second tight end behind Austin Hooper.

Jadeveon Clowney is coming off a fantastic, bounce-back season for Cleveland in 2021. In 14 games, Clowney recorded 9 sacks, 11 tackles for a loss and 37 combined tackles. It’s evident that Clowney benefited from being lined up across from All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett.

Clowney seems to be pretty set on coming in with a big payday and there is no denying that he deserves a double-digit million salary this upcoming season. That is exactly what he is expected to demand and don’t be surprised if the Browns are willing to pay him that as well.
