Browns: John Johnson III on Instagram ‘OBJ coming back’
NFL rumors swirl this time of year and on Wednesday night, John Johnson III may have set off yet another rumor, this time involving Odell Beckham Jr. and a Cleveland Browns reunion
The Cleveland Browns have had quite the offseason thus far and now, a current player revealed that a former player could be coming back.
On Wednesday night, John Johnson III was on Instagram Live and said “OBJ coming back. You ain’t hear it from me tho.”
Could you imagine if Odell Beckham Jr. returned to the Browns after how his time just ended? What a story that would be.
Now, I fully understand that this, like many topics before it, will have the fanbase divided, especially on the bird app. There aren’t many topics that don’t send Browns Twitter into a frenzy, but this is surely one of those topics that both sides have legitimate desires that make sense.
On Tuesday, Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com that Beckham hasn’t “slammed the door shut on returning to the Browns.” The reasoning for him potentially returning was the fact he loved the guys in the locker room with him and the fans. The issue seemingly was with quarterback Baker Mayfield, especially after Odell Beckham Sr. released that video that absolutely trashed Mayfield.
That occurred on the day of the NFL trade deadline, but it would be days later that Beckham was no longer on the team. The Browns did OBJ a favor by releasing him, giving him an opportunity to pick his next destination. He ultimately chose the Rams and helped lead the team to a Super Bowl.
Could he do the same for the Browns in 2022? Well, this might not even be a real possibility as OBJ is yet again rehabbing from a torn ACL he suffered in the Super Bowl. That would be a snag and some fans have already voiced they wouldn’t want to waste the money on a player they’d only have in the latter weeks of the regular season at the earliest.
Let’s forget about the injury for a second and take a look at what Beckham could do with a much better quarterback in Deshaun Watson. As Beckham Sr. pointed out in the video, his son was open a ton and Mayfield either missed the target or simply didn’t see him.
So was it Baker not being able to progress through his reads or was it Beckham was running the wrong route? The latter had no issue with Matthew Stafford tossing him the rock, so just imagine what he could do with Watson.
It would be quite the story if what Johnson said comes true and it could be a chance at redemption of sorts of Beckham. It would be poetic justice should he return to the Browns and help them win a Super Bowl a season after he left the team and got a ring of his own.
