Ranking the 2022 Cleveland Browns opposing quarterbacks
QB No. 11: Marcus Mariota
Once considered one of the bright young quarterbacks in the league, Marcus Mariota has had quite the journey since winning the Heisman Trophy and being taken with the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft. After spending two seasons as the Las Vegas Raiders backup, Mariota is getting a second shot to regain his former spot as a starting quarterback in the NFL in Atlanta.
Although Mariota has a career record just below .500, he has a 62.8 career completion percentage with 77 touchdowns to only 45 interceptions.
Reuniting with his former offensive coordinator from his days with the Tennessee Titans, Arthur Smith, Mariota takes over for a rebuilding Falcons team that will focus on running the ball and playing efficient turnover-free football. Mariota has the skillset to excel in that type of scheme if he can stay healthy.
Cleveland Browns 2022 Opposing QB No. 10: Mitch Trubisky
Coming in at No. 10 on this list is the newly acquired Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, Mitch Trubisky. This will be a very interesting season for the sixth-year pro. On one hand, you have a quarterback with 50 starts to his name, but on the other hand, he hasn’t started a game since 2020.
While with the Chicago Bears, Trubisky posted a record of 29-21 with just over a 64 percent completion percentage. Trubisky has thrown for 64 touchdowns to only 38 interceptions and nine rushing touchdowns in his career. The Bears moved on after the 2020 season, and Trubisky spent last season backing up Josh Allen in Buffalo.
Two massive questions surround Trubisky in 2022. First, did the signal-caller get better through osmosis since he did not receive many game reps? Secondly, will the Steelers be able to switch up their offense to be run first in order to accentuate the positive things Trubisky can do on a football field?
He has the talent to be a net positive quarterback, but to this point in this career, he has not been an elevator for those around him. Expect some good and some bad from ‘Mr. Biscuit’ this season.
Cleveland Browns 2022 Opposing QB No. 9: Tua Tagovailoa
Tua Tagovailoa has been tasked with the unenviable position of leading a good roster while being shrouded by doubt and a lack of confidence by the Miami Dolphins front office. So far, the young man from Hawaii has handled all the speculation as well as could be expected.
Tagovailoa has only started 21 games through his first two seasons in the NFL, but he has a positive record of 13-8.
With a new coaching staff in Miami, Tagovailoa has an opportunity to make this team his own if can perform. The Dolphins made one of the bigger offseason trades when they acquired Tyreek Hill from the Kansas City Chiefs. For better or for worse, how Tagovailoa plays this season will seal his fate one way or the other in Miami.
Tagovailoa has the base level of talent to be successful in the NFL. If he and first-year head coach Mike McDaniel can come together, this could be the start of something special in Miami.
