Why the Cleveland Browns should draft Christian Watson
By Jacob Roach
The NFL draft is nearly upon us and the Cleveland Browns still need more talent at receiver, let’s look at why Christian Watson is a perfect fit.
It is finally less than a month from the NFL draft and the Cleveland Browns are finalizing their draft boards and visiting with prospects. Albert Breer of SI.com reported that on Friday the Browns will be meeting with Christan Watson for a top 30 visit. Watson is one of the quickest risers in this year’s draft class after turning a ton of heads during the Senior Bowl.
Christian Watson is a wide receiver prospect from North Dakota State with elite physical tools and characteristics. Watson checked into the NFL combine at 6-foot-4 and 208 pounds but even as a big physical receiver he possesses elite speed, running a 4.36 40-yard dash at the combine.
It isn’t often that you find a receiver of this size with the ability to get verticle in a hurry like Watson can. He has the ability to not only stretch the field but can high point the ball and win contested catch opportunities due to his elite size and strong hands.
There is some worry that coming from an FCS school but when put up against FBS players at the Senior Bowl, Watson continued to impress and flash his ability. The Browns’ wide receivers are often asked to block in the run game, Watson is an elite level blocker his size and strength are noticeable in the run game on film.
In four years at North Dakota State Watson had zero fumbles, not just zero lost fumbles, he never fumbled the football after a reception. Getting a player that has strong ball security while also being able to hit a home run would be a great addition to the Browns’ offense.
Watson is a do-everything player and could be considered a steal if the Browns were able to draft him at pick 44. He can take a short pass and turn it into a big play after the catch with his elite athleticism and speed. He can also make the tough catches on 3rd and short because of his size and strength.
Watson has elite traits and adding him to a room that has already been improved with Amari Cooper could help get the Browns back to the playoffs in 2022.
