Browns: 3 Baker Mayfield trade proposals worth accepting
By Greg Newland
Baker Mayfield trade proposal No. 2
Pittsburgh Steelers Receive:
- Baker Mayfield, QB
Cleveland Browns Receive:
- Stephon Tuitt, DT
- Agree to take on 50 percent of Mayfield’s Salary
One team that has expressed interest should Mayfield be released is the Pittsburgh Steelers. Typically, I would be terrified to send a player to a division rival, but honestly, this trade scenario doesn’t scare me at all. I’m not sure that Mayfield would even beat out Mitchell Trubisky as the starter.
So why would the Steelers even be interested in this deal?
I’m not saying the Steelers will tank, but if they have ever been in a rebuild in the last 20 years, this is it. And the contract of Stephon Tuitt is about as bad as it gets.
Not only would they be getting a starting-caliber quarterback at half the cost, but they would also be getting Tuitt’s contract off their books saving them north of $12 million over the next four years. His contract has three void years in it.
So why should Berry consider this? He’s giving up a lot, but at least getting a guy back in return who can perform at a high level and at a position that is desperately needed. Tuitt would be an instant impact player at defensive tackle and could make this defensive unit elite.
The Steelers still have $13.3 million in cap space left, so I’m still not sold they would be highly motivated to make a deal.
