Cleveland Browns: What to expect from Javon Wims
By Jacob Roach
On Wednesday the Cleveland Browns signed wide receiver Javon Wims, let’s take a look at what to expect from the 27-year-old receiver.
The Cleveland Browns continued to add to their roster this week as they signed a couple more players on Wednesday including form Bears wide receiver Javon Wims. Wims was originally a 7th-round pick of the Bears out of Georgia in the 2018 NFL draft.
In three seasons with the Bears, he played sparingly and collected 28 total receptions for 266 yards and 2 touchdowns.
You can’t learn a lot from Wims tape in the NFL but he has really good size at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds. He doesn’t have elite speed to stretch the field but he ran a 4.53 at the combine and has shown the ability to run away from defenders at times on the field.
He has a good leaping ability that allows him to go up and make contested catches.
During Wims senior season at Georgia, he led the Bulldogs in receiving with 45 receptions for 720 yards and 7 touchdowns. He has the size but needs refinement in his blocking downfield, he has the physical tools but his technique needs work. Wims also needs to work more on route running, he has improved since he entered the league but still isn’t a great route runner.
Wims hasn’t played a ton of special teams in his career but if he wants to find a home in Cleveland that might be where he needs to find it. With great size and decent speed, he has the tools to be a major contributor on that side of the ball. The Browns need talent at wide receiver, Wims has a chance to prove he can be that.
If Wims can get refine his route running and use his size to his advantage he could have a shot at making the Browns’ final roster.
