Cleveland Browns: 3 ideal NFL Draft picks in first two rounds
Cleveland Browns Ideal NFL Draft Pick at No. 99
Alex Wright, EDGE Rusher, UAB
No, this is not Alex Wright, Das Wunderkind of WCW fame (shout out to you if you understood that reference), this is Alex Wright out of UAB.
Wright is a big, lengthy EDGE rusher that brings a lot to the table and that could really help this Browns defense out. He stands at 6-foot-5 and weighs 271 pounds. His length can be disruptive to opposing quarterbacks by either applying pressure and being able to knock the ball free, or by getting his long arms up in the passing lanes.
His college numbers aren’t eye-popping, but he did play at a high level as a true junior in 2021. He totaled 4.5 sacks and 28 tackles, which isn’t anything elite, but he still contributed in a big way.
ESPN analysis, Matt Miller, projected Wright to go to the Browns at pick No. 118 and that’s even better value for Cleveland. However, if the Browns are high on Wright, they might want to make sure he doesn’t have the chance to get drafted by someone else before they make their next selection 19 picks later.
Wright’s draft stock might have taken a slight hit as he strained his left pec benching at the combine and then followed that up with a not-so-great Pro Day. Another knock on him might be his lower-body size as he has a smaller build, which could give him issues turning the corner on defenders.
Regardless of whether it’s at 99 or 118, the Cleveland Browns would be making an ideal pick to continue to help build this defensive line. For the sake of this piece, I’ll say he goes to the Browns at 99 and everyone rejoices.
