Baker Mayfield is still a member of the Cleveland Browns roster and there might not be an end in sight to this saga, and we still don’t know half the details apparently

2021 was a season to forget for Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns. However, as long as Mayfield technically remains a part of their roster, it will be hard to move on.

Following the 2022 NFL Draft, Mayfield is still with the Browns despite the fact that the incoming class of rookies was underwhelming at the position. Even with that being the case, no teams bit on a trade for Mayfield — and suitors seem to be disappearing fast.

And with him still on the roster, more details continue to emerge from the disastrous 2021 season. Now, we are starting to hear more about what went down with the release of wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. and how it ruined things for Mayfield in Cleveland.

The departure of Beckham began when the wide receiver’s father posted a video to social media showing his son running free, with the ball not heading his way. According to a report from ESPN’s Jake Trotter, Beckham not only didn’t publicly disavow his father’s actions but also didn’t reach out to Mayfield despite them having a close friendship.

"“OBJ didn’t disavow his father’s comments publicly, and he didn’t call or text Mayfield privately, according to multiple sources, even though they had often played video games together and had vacationed in Big Sky, Montana, with teammates on Labor Day weekend.”"

From there, the star receiver was released and players saw someone they respected head out the door. The fact that OBJ was apparently leaving due to this schism with Mayfield “poisoned the well” for him according to Trotter.

There were even those who flat out agreed with Beckham, Sr. that the ball wasn’t going to their best player enough — even with him being open.

"“Why would I watch the video?” the player asked rhetorically, according to a source familiar with the remark. “I see it every day in practice.”"

Now, more reports are coming from Mayfield’s camp as Trotter says there are those close to him who thinks the coaching staff set Mayfield up to “look as hapless as possible” in the final game he played against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

That’s quite the claim since it would be hard to believe a coaching staff would intentionally throw a game (which is what would have happened here) just to stick it to a player.

Whatever happened, we may never know but what is true is this — the quicker Baker Mayfield finds a new home, the quicker both sides can move on. And that will be good for all involved.
