On Saturday, Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson and former star Bernie Kosar met with members of the semi-pro Cleveland Rams.
It was the home opener for the team that made some headlines back in April when they were able to turn a routine practice into a heroic event.
Team owner Randy Knight, Sr., and several players rushed to a nearby house during practice when they noticed the building was covered in flames — and a man was trapped inside. They were able to get Henry Clay to safety and Clay was an honorary captain for the game on Saturday.
As for Watson and Kosar, they were in awe of the way the players put themselves in harm’s way in order to save another life.
"“To see a man’s house burning down and to not even think about themselves,” Kosar said to Cleveland Rams owner Travis Knight according to Alec Sapolin of Cleveland 19. “You’re really the heroes. I’m honored and humbled to be here today.”"
Kosar also announced a donation from the 428 Athletics Sports Complex according to Sapolin.
For Watson, this was his first public appearance as the new franchise quarterback for the Browns. A former first-round pick of the Houston Texans, Watson was added in a mega-trade this offseason where the Browns gave up three first-round picks to secure his rights.
They then agreed to a $230 million contract which is fully guaranteed. This is despite the fact that Watson faces a potential suspension from the league for off-field conduct.
Cleveland was 8-9 last season and decided to go after Watson as an upgrade over Baker Mayfield who was the No. 1 overall pick in 2018.
Mayfield has been the starter since Week 4 of the 2018 season and is still on the roster as they look for a team willing to make a trade.
