Cleveland Browns: 3 surprise cut candidates ahead of 2022 season

Cleveland Browns cut candidate No. 1 – Baker Mayfield
At this point, absolutely no one wants to see Baker Mayfield released, but it’s looking more and more like the Cleveland Browns may not be able to find a trade partner. When general manager Andrew Berry originally made the trade for Deshaun Watson, I think the expectation was a third or even second-round pick would be achievable.
But with having very little leverage on a guaranteed fifth-year option contract, no one has been willing to play ball with the Browns. Teams are now wanting to not even give up a late-round pick and are asking Cleveland to still pay a solid chunk of his $18.5 million salary.
I’m in the camp of getting rid of him for literally anything, but I also know he can’t be on the opening day roster. I’m not saying I blame Mayfield for being upset at the situation, but any fan of the Browns knows the distractions he will cause are not worth having him on the roster to prove a point.
A few teams have shown interest in Mayfield, and a few teams should be interested in Mayfield, but to this point, Berry hasn’t been motivated to finalize a deal.
I’m not exactly sure what he is waiting on, but the longer this all plays out, the more and more chance that the team ends up releasing the former number one pick.
