Cleveland Browns need No. 1: Address the defensive line

The last obvious need on the Browns’ roster is defensive line help.

The first order of business needs to be getting Jadeveon Clowney to re-sign back with Cleveland. Clowney is known for taking his time with his free agency decisions, but Cleveland needs to remain persistent.

It’s hard to imagine a scenario where Clowney signs elsewhere, but a defensive end combination of Myles Garrett, Jadeveon Clowney, rookie Alex Wright, and Chase Winovich would be hard for opposing teams to slow down.

The Browns don’t only need to address the defensive end position, but also the interior defensive line room.

Currently, Cleveland has Taven Bryan, Perrion Winfrey, Sheldon Day, Jordan Elliot, and Tommy Togiai. Another addition or two at defensive tackle would be very beneficial.

There are still a few good free agent options out there at the position such as Akiem Hicks, Ndamokung Suh, Sheldon Richardson, and Larry Ogunjobi.

All the above options would boost Cleveland’s interior defensive line and bring in more depth.

Hicks, 32, has played for the Chicago Bears since 2016. He made a Pro Bowl in 2018 and has been a dominant force inside for his entire career.

Ndamukong Suh, 35, is an older option but a player who still has proven he has some left in the tank. Suh is a five-time Pro Bowler and a three-time First-Team All-Pro player.

Most recently Suh has been with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 2021, he had six sacks, seven tackles for a loss, and 13 quarterback hits.

Finally, there are two names on the list above who are still free agents and are former Browns. Sheldon Richardson and Larry Ogunjobi are both good options for the Browns at the interior defensive line position. Both players are proven veterans who can make a difference in any given game.

Richardson was most recently with the Minnesota Vikings and Ogunjobi was with the Cincinnati Bengals. Both guys are pretty similar, as they are stout against the run and are able to rush the passer from the interior.

Regardless of who it is, the Browns need to bring in another body to the defensive line room to acquire depth and more talent in the position group.
