By Randy Gurzi
The Daily Dawg Tags bring you all the Cleveland Browns news you need to know, including details about the Baker Mayfield trade talks with Carolina
It has long been suspected that money is the sticking point in any Baker Mayfield trade and there has been even more confirmation of this.
This week, it was made known that the Carolina Panthers had an interest in Mayfield but they didn’t want to pay his full $18.8 million salary. While Cleveland is willing to pay some of it, they didn’t want to meet the demand from Carolina which would have been to eat between $13-14 million of the guaranteed salary.
Cleveland took a risk by rejecting this offer since they could end up paying the entire contract if a trade partner is not found — and Mayfield winds up being released. And with Carolina adding Matt Corral in the draft, they might not be as desperate to make a move.
A look at what happened between the two teams — and more — can be found in today’s Daily Dawg Tags.

"“It is unsure how much the Browns are willing to pay to get rid of Mayfield, or what combination of salary and picks they were willing to negotiate.”"
The big issue is whether or not the Browns paint themselves in the corner. Releasing Mayfield will cost them $18.8 million and while it makes sense to try and get the most for him, this game of high-stakes chicken might not work in their favor. Time will tell, but they’re banking on someone becoming more desperate for a quarterback — and apparently not backing off of what they want.
"“I think it says the team has bought in. We want to win,” running back Nick Chubb said of all the players in town for the week. “We want to change how things were in the past. For everybody to come back, that says a lot.”"
In 2021, the Browns offense stayed away from OTAs at the request of center J.C. Tretter. Also the president of the NFLPA, Tretter was released in the offseason and the team is back to work as usual. There are those who think these practices aren’t helpful but we all saw the team struggle with cohesion last year. Having more time together — with structured practices — is never a bad thing.
