Grading the Cleveland Browns offensive depth
Cleveland Browns Wide Receiver Depth
The Browns currently have one legitimate proven wide receiver on the roster in Amari Cooper and another ascending boundary threat in Donovan Peoples-Jones. Outside of Cooper and Peoples-Jones what do the Browns have in their wide receiver room?
Currently, the Browns have 11 receivers on their roster. Out of those 11 receivers, five are rookies and only two of those rookies were drafted by the team. The Browns have plenty of athleticism, speed, and size in their wide receiver room, but to this point, those attributes have not translated into individual player success on the football field.
The Browns are counting on a second-year leap from speedster Anthony Schwartz to provide a vertical threat in the passing game. Additional heavy contributions will be required from rookie David Bell and return man Jakeem Grant in the slot. Grant and Schwartz should also see occasional work in the gadget play department.
Behind Schwartz, Bell, and Grant in the wide receiver room the Browns have: Ja’Marcus Bradley, Mike Harley Jr., Travell Harris, Isaiah Weston, Javon Wims, and Michael Woods II. This group does possess the necessary attributes and skill sets to round out a diverse wide receiver corp. The potential is there for on-field success, but potential by itself is not enough to get the job done in the NFL. The Browns will likely roll into training camp with this group of young wide receivers in the hopes that one or two separate themselves as legitimate playmakers.
As of right now, outside of Cooper and Peoples-Jones, this wide receiver room does not inspire confidence. If these young receivers do not prove themselves early on during training camp, the Browns could be in the market for veteran cut candidates.
