2022 NFL Draft prospects Cleveland Browns may regret passing on No. 2: Travis Jones, DT

In the third round of the draft, the Cleveland Browns picked up Martin Emerson, a cornerback from Mississippi State. He could end up being the third corner on the team eventually and might be a very good selection overall. However, the Browns did leave Travis Jones on the board, and he might have been an even better pick.

Cleveland has several players at defensive tackle right now that could end up starting. There’s Taven Bryan, Jordan Elliott, rookie Perrion Winfrey, and Tommy Togiai. The problem is, none of them has proven they can be proficient starters at the NFL level, and none of them are one-techniques that can stop the run.

While it’s true the NFL is pass-happy, the Browns do play in the same division as the Baltimore Ravens (who drafted Jones) and the Pittsburgh Steelers — two teams that love to run the ball. Even the Cincinnati Bengals — who have Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins — can run it with Joe Mixon.

That’s why it wouldn’t have been a terrible idea to add the 6-foot-5, 333-pound Jones who can shut down a running game.

With their group of interior rushers along with Myles Garrett, Jadeveon Clowney, Chase Winovich, and Alex Wright, Cleveland will be able to get after the quarterback. What they will struggle with, is stopping the run. Jones could have remedied that in a big way.
