Baker Mayfield Landing Spot No. 1 – Carolina Panthers

The one “idea” I have heard floating around that makes a ton of sense for Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns would be a quarterback swap with the Carolina Panthers. Supposedly things heated up on draft night between the two teams, but then cooled down when Berry wouldn’t agree to pay a portion of the salary.

Carolina ended up drafting Matt Corral, but I don’t think anyone believes he will be ready to play or start in the 2022 season. The idea that is interesting is an exchange of Sam Darnold for Mayfield. This scenario would not alleviate and salary cap for the Browns in 2022 but could put them in a better position if Watson was suspended for most of or all of the 2022 season.

The million-dollar question, is Darnold better than Jacoby Brissett, the current Browns backup? The statistics and winning percentages are not staggering for either, but I don’t think anyone would argue that the talent is there for Darnold.

Many thought the trade to Carolina would resurrect his career, but once again he finds himself in a tough situation.

The only holdup I see for a deal like this is the Panthers being greedy. The belief may be the Browns want to move on more from Mayfield than the Panthers from Darnold, so a pick may need to be included. With the salary cap not really being a concern and it only being a one-year deal, I don’t hate this option at all.

I don’t think Brissett or Darnold is half the quarterback that Watson is, but I do think in the Kevin Stefanski system, Darnold could be just as successful as Mayfield was in the 2020 season.
