Lack of trade partner for Baker Mayfield could be trouble for Browns

If the Cleveland Browns have yet to find a trade partner for Baker Mayfield, is it becoming inevitable that they will be forced to release him?

The Cleveland Browns have two points of unclarity right now, and to be honest, it is really clouding the entire 2022 season. The first cloud is the Deshaun Watson situation.

One week we are hearing he will certainly be suspended for one year and maybe even more. And now all of a sudden some believe he won’t even be suspended.

At this point I don’t even care (slight exaggeration) what the suspension is, let’s just get it figured out so we can move on. Whether it’s Watson or Jacoby Brissett as the starting quarterback in 2022, the one thing we know is it won’t be Baker Mayfield which leads me to cloud number two.

Andrew Berry and Kevin Stefanski handled mini camp the proper way. Instead of fining him for not showing up, the organization excused Mayfield from the mandatory activities.

Rumors started swirling again early this week that talks between Berry and the Carolina Panthers once again heated back up.

This is the second time many thought a deal could get done, and the second time it all went to the wayside. With the first week of camp over now for both sides, the motivation for the Panthers to make a trade is dwindling.

If Berry is truly missing out on trades over a disagreement on how much of the fully guaranteed $18.9 million, he is taking on in 2022, he is not nearly as smart as I believed. No matter what the outcome of the Watson situation is, Mayfield’s days on this team are done. Why get nothing just to be forced to release him in another month?

I do have one conspiracy theory to throw out there.

Is Berry dragging his feet to find out what Watson’s situation will be? If he knows the suspension length, his trade with the Panthers may be different. A long suspension could have him interested in Sam Darnold while a shorter suspension would have him only interested in draft assets.

Maybe Berry is still just one step ahead of us all?
