Best Cleveland Browns pass-catcher No. 8: Mac Speedie
Hall of Famer Mac Speedie played all seven of his NFL seasons with the Browns from 1946 through 1952. After being selected in the 15th round of the 1942 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions, Speedie didn’t play professional football until after serving his country in the military and was moved to the Browns by then.
With Cleveland, he had the luxury of having fellow Hall of Famer and the best quarterback in franchise history Otto Graham throwing him the ball.
Speedie delivered every season and was a huge reason the team continued to win championships. He led the AAFC league twice in yards gained per season and he led the NFL in total receptions during the 1952 season with 62.
Overall Speedie, a great name for a wide receiver collected 349 receptions for 5,602 yards and had 33 touchdowns. In 1947, in a game against the Buffalo Bills in the old AAFC league, Speedie caught a Browns record 99-yard pass for a touchdown from Otto Graham — just one of his many highlights.
Once his NFL career was over, the Illinois native who went to Utah to play collegiately, headed north to play for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He spent two seasons with them and one with the B.C. Lions before becoming an AFL head coach for the Broncos.
