Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns have finally gone their separate ways and now the stories about what went wrong are coming to light

It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out Baker Mayfield and Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski didn’t see eye-to-eye.

The two seemed to click in 2020 when they won 11 games in the regular season but then in 2021, the tension was visible from space — and it all culminated in a public pursuit of Deshaun Watson and the recent trade of Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers.

And as expected, the stories about what really happened behind the scenes are starting to come out. First, we heard that Mayfield was frustrated with Stefanski for not appearing at a meeting following a tough loss to the New England Patriots.

Stefanski, who was meeting with Myles Garrett who publicly called out the coaching staff following the loss, didn’t appreciate Mayfield criticizing him. This reportedly led to the coach taking the “kid gloves” off and pointing out Mayfield’s mistakes.

Now, another story has surfaced, and it doesn’t paint Mayfield in the best light. A recent article from The Athletic says coaches and players found him “annoying” and said he divided the locker room.

Other insults thrown at Mayfield include calling him “childish and immature” while adding he was “difficult to coach.”

What led to the downfall of Baker Mayfield?

While these takes come across as harsh, they shouldn’t be unexpected. There were reports before Cleveland went after Watson that the coaches wanted an “adult” under center.

Of course, there are concerns about the player they chose since Watson was handed a fully-guaranteed $230 million contract despite having some serious civil lawsuits and a potential NFL suspension lingering overhead. But the fact that they wanted to upgrade was no secret at all.

Having said that, there’s really no reason for anyone in the organization to be leaking anything at this point.

The Browns made their decision and Mayfield gets a fresh start in Carolina. It would surely be best for everyone involved to talk about the future, because the rest is all in the rearview.
