Cleveland Browns: 3 worst trades in the last 5 years
By Greg Newland
Cleveland Browns bad trade No. 1 – 2019, Odell Beckham
Until this offseason, the most famous trade since 1999 for the Cleveland Browns was the acquisition of Odell Beckham. You must give John Dorsey some credit, he may have run himself out of Cleveland because he was control and power hungry, but the guy could sign talent to a roster.
It’s just unfortunate he had no regard for the cap.
Once it was said and done, the deal between the Browns and Giants sent Jabrill Peppers, Kevin Zeitler, a first-round pick, and a third-round pick to New York, with the Brows receiving OBJ and Oliver Vernon.
Truth be told, neither player really worked out in Cleveland. OBJ had about two good games, and Vernon had a solid six-game stretch before twice having season-ending injuries. At the time Zeitler was considered one of the best guards in the game, and Peppers was really starting to play better.
What makes me the sickest about this trade is how well Peppers would have fit into this Joe Woods defense. We all remember the highlight reels he had at Michigan playing linebacker and safety moving all around the field.
For everything the Browns gave up in this deal, Vernon ended up basically retiring after his second injury, and OBJ’s dad forced a trade by publicly shaming Baker Mayfield for not throwing his son the ball. I remember when the news broke and being so excited the Browns finally had a legit wide reiver, boy was I wrong.
