Two years ago, defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson left the Browns over money issues and now, the two might be gearing up for a reunification.

The Cleveland Browns are in need of a veteran presence at the defensive tackle position – the weakest spot on the roster – and a reunion with Sheldon Richardson could be in the works.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, the Ndamukong Suh chatter involving the Browns was never really a thing as he wasn’t on their radar. It makes a ton of sense for the Browns to not be interested in the 35-year old Suh.

It also makes sense to try and bring back Richardson, who already knows defensive coordinator Joe Woods’ system and had success lined up alongside Myles Garrett. Now, if this reunion were to happen, Richardson would be bookended by Garret and Jadeveon Clowney, which could give him more opportunities to get after the opposing quarterback.

Richardson decided to leave the Browns last offseason due to the Cleveland wanting him to take a pay cut. Instead, Richardson returned to the Vikings, the team he played for in 2018. If he were to sign back with the Browns, he would likely not be getting a hefty contract.

“Well, well, well, how the turntables,” – Illustrious businessman Michael Scott.

During the two years Richardson spent with the team that resides on the shores of Lake Erie, he was terrific. He played in all 32 games and started in all but one of those games. In those 32 games, he racked up 7.5 sacks (4.5 in 2020), 126 combined tackles (9 for loss), 33 pressures, 16 quarterback hits, seven pass deflections, and four forced fumbles.

As of right now, the Browns are going to roll the dice with the likes of Taven Bryan, Jordan Elliott, and rookie Perrion Winfrey, who just signed his rookie deal earlier today. While the defensive tackle position isn’t going to win or lose you games, unless you have Aaron Donald, of course, it would be nice to have that veteran leadership on this relatively young squad. Winfrey getting that tutelage under Richardson could help him immensely moving forward.

The Browns currently have two roster spots available for the 90-man training camp roster and a reunion with Richardson makes all the sense in the world. If the two parties do indeed decide to run it back together, I can see a deal getting done as early as this weekend, with camp opening to the veterans next week
