Cleveland Browns: 3 hardest potential upcoming cuts
By Randy Gurzi
1. Demetric Felton, RB
Mike Harley, Jr. isn’t the only player feeling the heat when trying to earn a spot as a slot receiver. Demetric Felton, who was drafted out of UCLA in the sixth round last year, has been spending more time in this role during camp after being listed as a running back during his rookie campaign.
Felton, who played both positions with the Bruins, is on the outs at running back with Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt, D’Ernest Johnson, and Jerome Ford ahead of him. Without a trade happening to send one of those players elsewhere, he will finish fifth — at best — at running back.
As for his chances of making it as a slot receiver, that too could be difficult. He surely has the talent but the problem for him is similar to what Harley is facing‚— there are several other options. What the Browns have to decide is how many project receivers they want to keep.
Anthony Schwartz is here for at least 2022 and he’s still a developing player. Isaiah Weston is a name they really like as well, and in the end, they might not be willing to keep more than that when it comes to players who they know won’t be major factors anytime soon.
Felton does have some of those receivers beat since he has skill as a return man but the Browns added a Pro Bowler in that department as well when they signed Jakeem Grant this offseason.
While it could be logical for Felton to wind up waived, it wouldn’t be an easy move to make.
