Is Jacoby Brissett really the Browns answer for six games?
By Greg Newland
Now that the Cleveland Browns know how long they will be without Deshaun Watson, is the team set on utilizing Jacoby Brissett?
After months of waiting, the Cleveland Browns finally received word that they will be without their star quarterback, Deshaun Watson, for the first six games of the 2022 year for violating league policies. At this point, it feels like the six games will stick, but there is a chance that Roger Goodell and the league office could step in and try to increase the length via appeal.
Reports are that Watson’s camp was willing to settle on six games, but the NFL was pushing for an indefinite suspension. After review, Judge Sue Robinson sided with Watson and now it remains to be seen if Goodell will completely shake up the process.
We’ve known for a while that some sort of suspension was coming, but now we have some concrete information to use which brings us to the next question. Is Jacoby Brissett the answer for the first six games of the season?
Will the Browns roll with Jacoby Brissett?
Honestly, I’m not sold Brissett is a starting caliber quarterback in the NFL, but I think he’s your best available option. Remember, the Browns have four very winnable games vs. the Panthers, Jets, Steelers, and Falcons before playing the Chargers and Patriots in Weeks 5 and 6. I think there are four winnable games there, but even if the Browns can scathe away 3-3, they are still in good shape.
The key in the first six games, find a way to beat Carolina (just to silence the haters) and beat the Steelers. Winning that first divisional game of the year would be huge and could really help the organization build some momentum.
Brissett should be all you need in this scenario. He isn’t a guy who can carry a team on his back, but in a quarterback-friendly offense, he can make good reads and get rid of the ball. Not to mention he will be more than happy to hand the ball off to Nick Chubb.
The only real upgrade would be a guy like Jimmy Garoppolo, and it would be silly to give up more picks and pay that much money only for six games of service. Plus, with his injury history, they could end up in a situation where they couldn’t trade him.
